Dispersion of motile bacteria in a porous medium

چکیده
Understanding flow and transport of bacteria in porous media is crucial to technologies such as bioremediation, biomineralization or enhanced oil recovery. While physicochemical filtration well-documented, recent studies showed that bacterial motility plays a key role the process. Flow experiments performed microfluidic chips containing randomly placed obstacles confirmed distributions non-motile particles stays compact, whereas for motile strains, are characterized by both significant retention well fast downstream motion. For bacteria, detailed microscopic study individual trajectories reveals two salient features: (i) emergence an active process triggered motility, (ii) enhancement dispersion due exchange between channels low regions vicinity solid grains. We propose physical model based on continuous time random walk approach. This approach accounts via variable pore-scale velocities through Markov equidistant particle speeds. Motility modeled two-rate trapping motion towards at obstacles. captures forward tails observed distribution displacements, quantifies hydrodynamic effect originates interaction motility. The reproduces experimental observations, predicts macroscale.

Dispersion in an unconsolidated porous medium
The dispersion of passive scalar by Stokes flow through a dilute suspension of solid spheres fixed at random points in space is a basic model of mixing and transport in an unconsolidated porous medium. Earlier investigators have used a general theory of macroscopic transport to calculate the Lagrangian velocity autocorrelation function and the effective diffusivity of this system. If the tracer...

Mathematical models for pollutant transport in semi-infinite aquifers are based on the advection-dispersion equation (ADE) and its variants. This study employs the ADE incorporating time-dependent dispersion and velocity and space-time dependent source and sink, expressed by one function. The dispersion theory allows mechanical dispersion to be directly proportional to seepage velocity. Initial...

Each motor drives a long, thin, helical filament that extends several cell body lengths out into the external medium. The assemblage of motor and filament is called a flagellum. The concerted motion of several f...
